Changing Trends in the Fitness Industry

The world is changing, it has always been but we find it changing faster than ever. In the recent times our lifestyles have changed a lot; there has been a transition from people engaging in physically draining activities to being couch potatoes. Are we doing enough to stay healthy? This question has always bothered many of us and so also the techies; and as a result they are trying to provide an innovative solution to this “Health” conundrum. As always techies want to have the final say but will they be successful? This is yet to be seen.

If we rewind to life 5 years back, we would see most people going to gym, keeping a track of what they have eaten and ask their gym instructor how many calories have they lost. The gym instructor would set an approximate goal and set them on an approximate path to reach that goal. Too many such approximations and we see the whole system leading to abyss, unless the person is a Pro-athlete and goes the extra mile for his or her health.

The idea was to keep a normal person healthy but things did not work well, so the techies provided gyms with special software to track the daily activities of each and every person and along with that all gym equipment had to be re-equipped with pedometers and other body stats measurement devices. This solution was really great; with some extra investment and a little rise in gym subscription prices we could finally achieve that perfect body of ‘David’ or ‘Venus’. Unfortunately, we like most humans forgot to log our data in the gym directory, and our food can never be what we order. So monitoring diet also became utopia.

If we step back 2-3 years from now we would find going to gym regularly was not possible. People retorted “We don’t have enough time for our families, how can we go to a gym!” When people are young they did not mind doing that extra bit, but as the average population aged, doing that bit seemed like a big pain. So, what now? Health is still wealth and we have to preserve that wealth, so the answer from techies - we will provide smaller pedometers, we will provide foldable ready to use gym equipment or a mutant of smaller size!! And this brought a massive change - people started getting several substitutes of gym equipment for their home and new, lighter exercising devices were invented. With those came fabulous apps that track your movements and calories burnt, and though approximate, they helped most of us. Our cell phones with the already prevalent GPS system made all the difference.

Now that gym was in the home and life was getting easier, techies thought of something different and took it to the next level; the idea was to make things lighter and track every activity an individual does. And with the help of data from other users of similar profile and some artificial intelligence to personalize the experience this not only changed the whole ball game but also tried to make these an integral part of everyday life. So came the fitness bands, smart watches and many similar devices in form of pendants, belts, bracelets and what not.

This technology is still evolving, but possesses a major challenge like all predecessors - “majority acceptance” of any single solution. Some are good others are better. The fact that we are still in search of the best, techies are also busy in shaping a better solution. Now phones like iPhone with M7 motion coprocessor can track the same details.

With phones giving the same if not better solutions, are these devices here to stay or is there still room for better solutions? The day is not far when Science Fiction or 007 gadgets will be reality even in the health and fitness industry with options of embedding some chip into your body and tracking it all. Till then, we keep the hunt on.
