To begin with, here's the definition of User Experience (UX) straight from the man who coined the term and brought it into the tech industry:

The first requirement for an exemplary user experience is to meet the exact needs of the customer, without fuss or bother. Next comes simplicity and elegance that produce products that are a joy to own, a joy to use.

That's Donald "Don" Norman, Cognitive Design expert. 

So, there you have it. User Experience is to fulfill the need/want of the user, by eliminating the errors and bottlenecks.
As simple as that isn't it?
But then, its simplicity makes it universal. And its pervasiveness makes it all encompassing. Which means User Experience is everything. Its in everything you do. Its in everything you ever have an experience with.

Case in point?

Lets say you need to take a trip. You have been saving up just the right amount of money, you planned it all out.
Ask yourself this. Why the planning? Why the saving? Traveling is fun when its spontaneous. Everyone says so. Isn't it?
Well, yeah, spontaneity is fun. But you can always be spontaneous. The planning is to ensure there are no problems. Its to make sure you have a great trip, right? That's User Experience. That great trip and making sure it truly is a great trip without a single hiccup is User Experience Design.
Same goes for everything. From ordering a pizza to starting a business. User experience is embedded everywhere.

For the preference of context, we're going to talk about UX in tech startups and tech business. When you start the idea of a business, be it an entirely new product as a startup or an addition to your existing business, what is the core message you want to send to the user?

"Hello, this will make your life easier. It'll help, its easy and it is great for what you want to do without any problems."
But that is the first half of the story. Yes, user satisfaction is important. But not as an absolute.
A good user experience acts as more than just a good experience. It  acts as a means to fulfill your own aspirations for business.
But the end of this entire process is a two sided coin.

Side 1: The User

The User gets a product that fulfills his needs. The product does it without hassle, with attention and without taxing the user's patience.
Result: A happier user is more likely to return to your product every time. They'll start being loyal to your product. They'll recommend it to their friends and networks. They'll want others to see how good your product is.

Side 2: The Business

Your business creates a great product with attention to UX. The product generates favorable reviews/reactions. It fulfills your need to create a good user base.
Result: Loyal user base means repeat business on what is your strong point. Repeat business combined with recommendations means increase in reach and thus in bottom line. Your business grows, your company gains momentum. You get bigger, better, higher.

The User Experience is a cyclical process.
Businesses use UX Design in the modern world to connect with the user. The user in return uses the positive experience to share it with their connected network.
Which means a good UX Design is for the user as well as the business.
