As you know, we are pretty much, intensely in love with web design. We love the way it allows us to play with color. To arrange a beautiful page within the screen. The constant creative challenge. One aspect of that love extends to a much more subtle, far more powerful, yet underrated aspect of Web Design. Typography. Typography originated from the day first word was written.The Web Typography. For a long time, cluttered web pages and heavy layouts meant that typography had no space to breathe in UI Design.
But, luckily, both for the designers and readers, web design methodologies have simplified. Taking the cue from the print and deciding not to repeat the same mistakes.

One of the major reasons for this change was the availability of some helpful fonts such as Helvetica. Invented in 1957 by Eduard Hoffman, the director of Haas Type Foundry in Münchenstein, Switzerland, with the help of Max Miedinger. Helvetica is hailed as the King of Fonts for its popularity and the swift adoption by several major corporations. The reason behind Helvetica's popularity is its simplicity. Due to its clean lines and Sans-serif nature, there is no distortion of what the text is trying to convey. Helvetica creates no visual noise at all. Interestingly, when the name was being decided, Helvetia was suggested (Latin for Switzerland). Later, to make the name sound catchier, Helvetica (Latin for Swiss) was decided upon. Its no coincidence how one of the most neutral and simplistic font is named after a country that has remained neutral for centuries.

In Web Design, Helvetica is highly preferred for the way it allows the content to be front and centre without stealing the attention. If there ever was a font that proved testament to the saying "Best Design is Invisible", it is Helvetica. And this is why Typography, much like Helvetica, as a broader subject is so subtle. The way a text appears with the help of the font is a subtle effect, almost intuitive. Yet simple fonts appeal to our subconscious.
