The Signup Simplicity: Keep It Short, They’ll Love It

So you are a new startup company. Let’s add a little detail, shall we? Let’s say you are a Software as a Service (SaaS) startup company. You have a lovely design for your website. Everything looks clean and you have a good assortment of services. And the best of all, there is a real demand for what you are offering. But you are still not gaining the traction. Analytics show a lot of visitors but no conversions.

For a tech startup, a high-usability primed web design solution is after all, the key element for success. The better your website interface and its user-engagement, the higher you go! So where are you going wrong? Could it be your massive sign up page with all those nitpicky query fields, asking for email, password, gender, country, double confirmation on password and forcing your end-user’s hand in deciding what business/service plan he wants?

Remember the Eight Second Rule

The Internet is full of wisdom. And a lot more babble. But there are some old tenets that do provide a good perspective.

“You have eight seconds to capture your user’s attention.”

Of course in today’s web, where a user is accessing several sites/apps at the same time, this time span is even shorter, down to three seconds. That’s 3 seconds to capture your user’s attention, get them to sign up, be ready to consume your services and thus accomplish what you want them to. So ask yourself. Is your Signup process following the eight second rule? Is it short and succinct enough to not create a huge questionnaire and allow user to quickly become a part of your audience?

Being Thorough and Being Efficient are two very different things

We get it. You want to make sure that the user comes to stay. And your signup form ensures that it’s a genuine user and a genuine sign up. But ask yourself. Do you want to appear as someone who is overly thorough to the point of being nitpicky or do you want to make the user feel that he is signing up with a smart, efficient service who knows how to get to work without a lag?

Signups Are Portals, Not a Test.

Remember: The User wants the service, not the signing up.
This is a very easily missed mistake when you want to make sure you convert a casual visitor into a user. The user is not there to benefit from your sign up/sign in page. He/she is there for your services. For their benefit. Design your sign up page accordingly. Minimize the questions, quicken the pace and let the user feel that tinge of excitement that it’s a simple process of putting in a couple of details and then they can directly access that which they came for.

Make it Engaging, since you want User Engagement

You cannot clap with one hand. If you want user engagement, you need to be user engaging. Plain and simple. Make sure your signup page is as interesting as your website. Keep it interesting and short. Use the microcopy to draw attention. Be positive, welcoming, genuinely interested in meeting this new user.

A lot of good signup pages use a small testimonial or a couple of logos to show the new user that he is making the good decision, an informed decision by choosing your service, since a lot of previous users have signed up and are happy with it.The best websites have a high user engagement because they provide a simple signup form with email and password query only. One such example is something we designed, a sport fantasy website called DumpsterFire. It is critical for success of a business, especially a startup, to focus on the nature of web development and web design solutions that provide a perfect harmony between the startup web development and the User Experience Design.
Key Takeaway: Keep it short, and they’ll love it!
