The Principles of Mobile UX Design

Ever since the Whatsapp-Facebook deal hit the news, mobile apps have once again reemerged as the talk of the tech town. And for good reason. When you have software products that are capable of reaching millions of users in a matter of days and become instantly inseparable from the daily routine, entrepreneurs need to pay attention.

But there is a difference that all these products such as Angry Birds, Instagram, Vine, Whatsapp consist that is the key to their success. In this article, we take a peek behind the curtain and try to understand what lies in the secret.

Principle I: Keep the Core, Shed the Noise.

Mobile UX Design is a highly nuanced process. You obviously cannot just lay features upon features on an app and then expect it to do well when the installation time is monumental due to a high file size. The real trick lies in elimination. Minimalism in terms of functionality has always been the notion when it comes to mobile ux development. Don't make it heavy. Focus on the core task. Make it simple, make it engaging.
It is true that simplification is a complex process. But that's just the half of it. Merely simplifying is not going to solve a problem. And this is what is required. Problem solving is the core attribute of any mobile app. So unless your simplification actually enhances the UX, it is nothing but incomplete. And that will reflect in the user experience.
The Mobile UX is simplification well done. Not only do you simplify but you also streamline. You choose which aspect, which feature, which functionality is the most important part of the app and you lay emphasis. Your code and your colors and your choreography, all point the user and encourage using that key feature. That's what your mobile UX design needs to accomplish. To put it simply, you reduce the noise in the screen and you bring out the important essence.

Principle II: Intimate Device, Personal connection, Sentimental attachment.

Mobile phones are highly intimate devices. Teens often joke that they are more apprehensive of leaving the cell phone unlocked in company than they are of accidents. And for good reason. The cell phone and what it contains is the most condensed, intangible representation of who you are. Your conversations, your photographs, your preferences. The Mobile UX Design ideal should consider this as the key tenet. Your app interface should feel familiar. Users tend to have particular preferences when they use their mobile because they have sentimental attachment to the device. It is a product, which is purchased out of instant liking and attraction. The app interface naturally needs to take advantage of this intimacy. When the mobile UX is geared towards becoming familiar and attentive, it quickly becomes a habit instead of a choice.

Principle III: Limited Space = Clever Interface Opportunity.

Mobile screens are unchangeable dimensions unless you change the device itself. No matter what you do, the user is going to experience your product in a confined, truncated space. Does this mean you make sure to stack up the features? Nope. Mobile UX Design, much like any other web development service, is a science of making the most while keeping the essential. Which means within the confined space, you have the opportunity to prioritize your app's features.
Like we said before. Reduce the noise. Bring out what's important. If you are developing a social network app, focus on showing people and conversations. If you are developing a fitness app, focus on the statistics and health improvement tips. The priority of your features and what information is visible on screen should be adaptable to the app's key feature and the target demographic.

Principle IV: No one likes to type a lot, unless they are talking to someone they like.

People hate typing. And for good reason. It is an extremely boring, tedious and monotonous process. And even more so when you have to squint close in a limited space and make sure you are hitting the right buttons. Mobile UX Designs which force the user to input a lot of information are instantly unattractive. Users love to type only when they are having a conversation. And it is the conversation that makes the typing interesting, rather than the app or the interface. The interface can only make it convenient, not interesting.
Eliminate a lot of query fields when a user is logging in your app. Let them hit the ground running. A good Mobile app UX is when the user is able to use the app instantly right from the time the installation is complete. Without waiting, without filling a form that plays twenty questions.

Principle V: Choose a Format: Text, Talk, Web, App.

There are four kinds of interactions any user will have the mobile device.

  • Talking.
  • Texting.
  • Browsing.
  • Playing.

Which of these applies to your mobile app? Your UX should be designed accordingly.

  • If it is about calling, your mobile UX design should focus on the contacts and the call/end call buttons.
  • If it is about texting, your mobile UX design will focus on the contact list but with a convenient keypad and a simple fluid conversation window.
  • If it is about browsing, your mobile UX design must focus on providing a clean search bar and lend prominence to the results of the search.
  • If it is about playing, your mobile UX design needs to focus on providing the quickest way to start playing and offer encouragement, challenges, rewards during the game.

Of course these principles are often borne out of common sense rather than a strictly technological protocol. But that is the key. UX Design is simple Common Sense. The technology moulds itself according to what is sensible, not the other way around.

So next time you plan for a mobile app, make sure to find a developer who can understand these principles. Who knows, your app might become the talk of tech town for good reason.
