How to Choose a Mobile Development Platform?

Read this blog to know which platform is best for your mobile application startup and how to choose a mobile development platform.

How to Choose a Mobile Development Platform?

If you ever lost your mobile phone, you will know how quickly it climbs up to your urgent priorities. Now think of it in the hands of your customer. It’s the one device you have got to dazzle them through a really useful application.
But which platform is best for your mobile application startup? The answer doesn’t lie in the name of the platform, say Hybrid or Native (iOS and Android). Way before you consider answering this question, you ought to ask yourself two really important questions –
1) What’s your business goal?
2) How does your mobile app benefit your end user?
Your mobile application strategy must align with your business goals. Once you have spelled out the problem that your app is solving, you need to consider how important it is for you to engage customers, how deeply you wish to engage them and whether your goal is getting more customers at once or consistent number of customers in the long run.

Customer UX is the soulmate of your mobile app

Like it or not, the abandon rate of mobile applications is higher than you think. Even in your wildest of imagination, you cannot gauge just how crucial this singular factor is for the success of your mobile application. Did you know that only 16 percent would give a mobile app more than two attempts? That leaves hardly any room for poor mobile app experience. Question: is UX that important for getting consistent customers? Yes. In fact, it’s the UX that would bring in the downloads consistently, keeping your customers loyal to your brand and multiply existing numbers.

A quicker MVP v/s a charming app

Choosing the right mobile platform is solely dependent on what you want. Perhaps you wish to charm your users by going the native-to-device approach where in you build a native app that integrates into the platform of their choice (like iOS or Android). Or you may prefer going in for a quick MVP by building a hybrid application which can be released across all platforms. But here’s an eye opener, the latter strategy is cost saving for sure but it doesn’t lead to a great UX.

Hybrid v/s Native

The industry at the moment is largely indecisive about approaches of building mobile applications. Yet, most experts and critics would unanimously agree that if UX is what you wish to achieve, native is the answer. Hybrid apps are doubtlessly easy to develop, cost less. Why? Because a majority of the code is written in HTML, JavaScript and CSS. As a result, developers can easily port the app to any other platform with very little additional development work. That doesn’t mean nobody pays that saved cost. It’s paid sorely in the clunkier designs and rough UX felt in most hybrid apps. You cannot expect a hybrid mobile app to address a pain point of your customer by being a pain itself.
On the other hand, native approach often comes with a cost at the beginning of development. But it’s an investment that lasts longer than you think and helps you achieve your business goals. Since native apps are specifically developed for a mobile operating system, following the technical guidelines of the OS, it runs faster, smoother and feels fantastic to a user. Much like ‘an iPhone is an iPhone’ logic, the user experience a native application provides (regardless of Android or iOS) can simply not be replaced by any hybrid. Did you know that Facebook had dropped their hybrid app in favour of native development?
Unless you are developing a mobile app that you know won’t last longer, go for native mobile app development. But most of all, choose your development partners who keep UX above everything else.
