Freeze! Seize the moment! That pretty much sums up what real-time engagement is all about. It means users get engaged to share a piece of their lives while it’s still happening. Incidentally, it coincides with the definition of present continuous tense - an action that’s happening at the time of speaking. Real-time engagement is truly present continuous.

Social media has led to real-time engagement of millions of users. It has provided them with a platform where they can impulsively share emotion about a pressing global issue, a local accident, live cricket or football, weddings and parenting, things that they are buying or the way they are living their lives. Without the ability to engage users instantly and immediately, social media wouldn’t be what it is today.

Why do people share on social media?
Why real-time engagement question is best answered in the fact that social media has allowed people to share emotions, get empathy from like-minded people. And these are real people. Even when they are engaging in a complaint against a consumer brand, they are not talking to robots, they are interacting with people. There are three major reasons why people share on social media-
1. I want to identify with it: People open social networks driven by an urge to gain or give empathy. This is an inherent human trait that is channelized by social media.
2. How does it affect my life: Users want to be updated with the latest happenings, trends, information around the globe because they want to see if any of these things affects their lives. Social media feeds on this need.
3. Is it useful/funny: Users around the globe turn to Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram, Linked-in etc because they are looking for utility of real time interactions. Posts can be useful, productive, thought-provoking, informative or funny.

Mobility and real-time engagement
The problem of actual interaction is that it is dependent on people’s location, availability, time etc. Social media solves that problem. Nervous about something? Text your boyfriend. Dying to share a good news. Share an update. Social media being easily available on phones, has helped people defy physical and even emotional barriers and reach out to other people.
Now with live video streaming, virtual reality social networks and video chatting, the real-time engagement is only going to penetrate deeper into users’ lives. A great social media application makes it possible for users to engage the way they do in real life.

Brands are finding this interesting since real-time marketing has yielded results. On social media, 72% of customers expect brands to reply within the hour. So if that brand is available to address these customers, it has earned repeat customers already.
